Guye Peak in Snoqualmie Pass

Posted by Thomas Wolter No Comments »

If you are looking for a very challenging hike, look no further than the Guye Peak trail in Snoqualmie Pass.  This trail is aggressive, challenging, and in some cases considered brutal.  Most people that hike the Snoqualmie Pass Guye Peak trail, want an intense workout, with a heightened level of danger.  If you hike this trail, take necessary precautions, as this hike has been the last for many novice hikers.

Many years of use have resulted in many side trails that can be confusing and lead you in the wrong direction.  Continue to follow the signs directing you to either Snoqualmie Mountain or Guye Peak.  If you give this hike a go, drop me a line and let me know how it went.  Happy hiking!

Exploding Snow in Snoqualmie Pass

Posted by Thomas Wolter No Comments »

The Department of Transportation is working on a few new ideas to handle the closure of Snoqualmie Pass from the winter snow pack.  If implemented, these measures could significantly decrease the amount of down time and closures of Interstate 90.  These last two winters brought a very significant amount of snow, and negatively impacted travel over Snoqualmie Pass, causing a very high level of frustration for drivers, both commercial and recreational.

One of the new measures being considered is the use of a Gazex.  A Gazex is a type of gas “exploder” used for avalanche control.  It creates a type of artificial explosion in a fixed location, such as a slide area or avalanche chute.  It can be mounted permanently, and activated remotely.  The State hopes to obtain approval for a grant for the Gazex.  The bad news is, there is not a very good chance that the grant will be obtained, and the Gazex installed for this coming winter…..but hopefully for the next, as this mechanism sounds like it could make a big difference in creating smooth, uninterrupted travel through Snoqualmie Pass.  For more information on this story click here.
